Your precious child looks like a demon or something from a scary movie. This problem is commonly referred to as “red eye.”

Red eye is becoming more and more of a problem and this is partly due to the emergence of digital photo technology. Since digital cameras do not need the same internal mechanics or space for film they are becoming smaller and smaller compared to their film counterparts.

This means that the flash is much closer to the lens. In fact, in most new point and shoot digital cameras the flash is directly above the lens. This is the problem. When the flash is closer to the lens it causes the flash to enter the iris directly and reflect straight back to the camera causing the terrible red eye that has ruined your family pictures.

Most digital cameras have a red eye reduction feature built in which causes a pre flash immediately before the camera exposes the image. This causes the iris to become smaller for the actual picture.

Unfortunately, this function rarely completely eliminates red eye from your photographs. Since most point and shoot digital cameras do not have a hot shoe allowing the photographer to add a flash away from the camera the only option for eliminating red eye is to fix it after the fact.

This is where Adobe Photoshop comes in. Photoshop makes it easy to correct even the worst cases of red eye in photographs. Are you concerned that Photoshop is too complicated or difficult to learn? Don’t be. Even someone with no experience at all can quickly and easily learn to fix red eye like a pro using Adobe Photoshop.

The Brush Preset picker will help you to find the right brush fast so make the most of it

With some Photoshop tools, such as the Clone Stamp, the Brush Preset picker is used simply to edit the tool’s brush size, softness and opacity.

Because the Clone Stamp’s function is to subtly replace one area of pixels with another, you don’t need its brush tip to be shaped like a rubber duck, for example!

However you can use the Brush Preset picker to arm yourself with a variety of creatively-shaped brushes, should your project require them. Working smarter with the Brush Preset picker means maximising its potential. If you’re not already familiar with this interface.

The Brush Preset Picker

Click on the Brustic to open the Brush Preset picker, and scroll down to see the default set of brushes.

Towards the foot of the list of default brushes you’ll find a variety of unusually-shaped brush tips, including brushes shaped like stars and blobs.

Click on the picker’s menu icon to access other, specialised sets of brushes. You can use the picker’s menu to display a thumbnail of the brush stroke, or set it to show the brush tip and name.

The numerical value indicates the brush’s initial diameter in pixels. You can customise this to suit your requirements. When you select a new set of brushes, you can either replace the existing default set or append the new set to it so you can use both.

Magic Wand:
The Magic Wand Tool (W) selects areas of similar color You can change the tolerance (how close the color values should be to the sampled color in order to be selected) of a Magic Wand selection, and choose whether you want the selection to be contiguous (pixels that are touching) or not (in which case, matching colors across the entire document will be selected)

Tips and Shortcuts for the Magic Wand:
Hold the Shift key to add another selection to the first.

Hold the Alt key (Option key on a Mac) to subtract your new selection from the first.

Hold Shift-Alt (Shift-Option) to select the intersection of your first and second selections.

Use the arrow keys to move the selection pixel by pixel If you feel that this doesn’t move your selection quickly enough, hold down Shift and use the arrow keys to move the selection ten pixels at a time.

Press Ctrl-J (Command-J on a Mac) to copy the selection into its own layer.

To cut the selection into its own layer, press Shift-Ctrl-J (Shift-Command-J)

If this seems familiar to you, it’s because I mentioned earlier how to copy a layer using the same keyboard shortcut Now that you know that not selecting anything sometimes means that everything is selected, it makes sense that simply by selecting a layer in the Layers palette, you can copy the entire layer by pressing Ctrl-J (Command-J)

To deselect a selected area, click outside of it with one of the Marquee tools, or press Ctrl-D (Command-D on a Mac)

To reactivate your last selection, press Shift-Ctrl-D (Shift-Command-D)

The Move Tool:
The Move Tool (V) moves a selected area or an entire layer .

You can invoke the Move Tool temporarily when using most other tools by holding down the Ctrl key (Command key on a Mac)

Tips and Shortcuts for the Move Tool:
For most tools, holding Ctrl-Alt (Command-Option on a Mac) and dragging a selected area will temporarily invoke the Move Tool, allowing you to move and duplicate the selected layer quickly

You can use the Crop Tool to resize your canvas Expand your document window so that it’s larger than the image area, and create a crop selection that includes the image and extends onto the gray areas “outside” the image Applying this crop will resize your canvas to include those extended boundaries, making your canvas larger.

Picture “pops out” of the frame

This is an easy task that can have dramatic effects. A portion of the picture will “pop out” of the original frame and look as though it has “popped” onto your screen.

Save a copy of the original picture and work on a second copy, just in case you make mistakes.
Use any selection tool to cut out only the portion of the image you wish to have “pop out”.
Lift the image by using the Float Command and duplicate it onto its own layer.
Create a new layer in the frame for the photo. You can use textures, borders or nothing at all.

Place a picture into text

Placing a picture into text is a simple job that creates a word using the picture. The picture will be placed into the text.

Select the image you want and place it in a new layer with a solid background.
Set the word you want using the type input method of choice. Use a style with a large area so much of your picture can be seen.
Select the type so you can move it around.
Click on the picture layer to edit the picture.
Use the Float Command to pick up the picture inside your text.
The selection will start a new layer and fill with a copy of the picture.
Turn off the original layer with the picture and your text will be filled with the picture.

Remove the white background from an image

Many images end up having a white background included in the frame. For example, a logo that may be used on different documents will often be surrounded by a white square. When placing it on a white page this is not a problem. However, placing it on a colored page will show the white square behind it. For a more professional look, follow these steps to remove the unwanted background.

Start a new layer and create an object of the same shape as your picture. The shape must replicate that of your picture and will be used like a cookie-cutter to place over the picture.
Make sure your shape layer is under the original picture layer in the Layer Palette.
Place the pointer over the line that divides these two layers in the Layer Palette while holding down the Alt/Option Key and click.
You have created a layer group. Choose Save As and select Photoshop EPS as the file format. Name the file. You are done.

NOTE: You may use Help and Export Transparent Image for an interactive wizard to help prepare images with transparency to be used in a page-layout application.

Make old photos look more vivid

Old photos can look dark or have a brown or gray color covering the entire image. Photoshop can help brighten and color these types of photos to make them vibrant and bring them closer to their original state.

Use Photo Filter from the Adjustment Layers area to choose color filters based on what your photo looks like.
Choose Color Balance from the Adjustment Layers area to adjust flesh and other tone levels for different elements in the photo.
Use Levels to balance the photo after the above changes are made.
Select an area with the Magic Wand to adjust from the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. You can repeat these steps as many times and in as many areas as necessary.
Adjust the Brightness/Contrast levels as your final adjustments to the photo.

Whiten teeth and eyes in Photoshop

There is no better way to make someone look fantastic than to whiten their teeth and eyes in a photo.

Create a new layer.
Select the Dodge tool.
Set the Range to Midtones on the Tool Options bar. The default Exposure is set at 50%. You may change this, but 50% is a good place to start.
Run the Dodge tool over the teeth and eyes to whiten. If you make a mistake or the results are too white, you can use Undo to reduce the Exposure level.
Zoom out frequently because the results often look different when viewing the entire image.

For years, Photoshop has been the gold standard in the image editing software department. The new CS4 version contains many significant upgrades from the former CS3. It’s easier to use and more versatile than ever. Photoshop Extended now provides extensive three-dimensional tools for those working in film and graphics.

The full version of Photoshop can retail for as much as $1000. That’s quite a bit of money for students and young professionals just starting out. Fortunately, Adobe offers a free download for a thirty day trial period. To do this you must first create an Adobe account. Registration is required for activation. After that, the software download is fairly effortless. After thirty days you must either purchase the full version of Photoshop or your copy will no longer work correctly.

If your interested in other Adobe products, Adobe offers free trials of complete suites. These include the CS4 Design Premium or CS4 Master Collection. These software bundles contain many top programs, such as Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver and more. These packages are different in that they are not available for free downloads. You must purchase a low-cost DVD set, usually ten to fifteen dollars, and install the programs manually. After thirty days the same conditions apply. The advantage to this system is that the DVDs can act as backup files after you fully purchase the software.

Aside from the Photoshop free download, there are other options to save you money. Adobe offers steep discounts to educators and students. But be careful, these editions are often hard to upgrade in the future. So if you’re interested in Adobe, but you’re just not sure, check out the free trial. What do you have to lose?

You’ll notice that some of the tool icons have small black triangles in their bottom right-hand corners. These icons contain hidden treasures! The triangle indicates that there are more related tools available; if you click on the tool icon and hold it down, a “flyout” menu will appear, displaying the additional tools.

Selection Tools:
You can use the selection tools to select certain areas of your document for editing. If you use a selection tool, only the area that’s selected will be affected by any changes you make. You can “feather” selections (specify a fuzzy radius for them) using the Feather field in the options bar.

Marquee tools (M) are used to create rectangular or elliptical selections, including selections that are “single row” (one pixel tall, stretching across the entire width of the document) and “single column” (one pixel wide, tretching through the entire height of the document).

To make single-row or single-column selections, click with the appropriate tool on the image area where you want to select a row or column. You can use the Lasso tools (L) to create freeform selections.

The Lasso Tool comes in three different forms:

Lasso Tool (L) Click and drag the Lasso Tool to draw a selection area. Releasing the mouse button will close the selection by joining the start and end points with a straight line.

Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) Click at different points to create vertices of a polygonal shape. Close the selection by moving your cursor to the beginning and clicking once, or pressing the Enter key.

Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) If you think you need help with making your selection, try the Magnetic Lasso Tool. Photoshop will attempt to make a “smart” selection by following the edges of contrast and color difference. Click once near the “edge” of an object and follow around it-Photoshop will automatically lay down a path.

You can also click as you follow the line to force points to be created on the path. Close the selection by pressing the Enter key or clicking at a point near the beginning of the selection. The Magnetic Lasso Tool is not available in ImageRead
